now at noon, radiation concerns for people living on treasure lie land -- island. the state memo. east bay residents jolted by an early-morning earthquake. ktvu talks to geologists about the seemingly recent occurrences of small quakes around the bay area. and what officers are telling students to keep an eye out for.

good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. new concerns for residents on treasure island. they've been told in the past that radiation leaks are not a health risk. but this shard is raising new concerns over radioactive safety on the island. brian flores is live on fresh ure island to let us know what -- treasure island to let us know what concerned families are saying. >> they certainly are concerned. we've spoken to many families and this afternoon as well. they say they received letters back in march telling them about the low level radiation that they deemed safe. but what they didn't know is what to think about these radioactive shards found here and with kids running around, that's especially disturbing they say. it looks like a rock. something perhaps a little kid could pick up. from an internal memo, this shard found earlier this year is considered radioactively dangerous. according to the memo obtained by the center for investigative

reporting, some shards were found on public lawns near apartment buildings on treasure island. this one found on bayside drive. the memo states if held long enough, it could cause burns, hair loss. the concern is that pieces like this may be on other parts of the island. residents we spoke with want it discovered and cleaned up quick. >> the concern, get it done immediately. let's move as fast as possible. don't put it on the back burner. know there's people that, humans, that are living around all of this and get it cleaned up. >> reporter: nobody officially knows the shards' origin but it's likely from when treasure island was a naval station. residents were never notified of the shards. the recent memo indicates not enough testing is being done and it urges the navy to continue testing especially the risk that kids could pick up a radioactive piece.

>> i'm scared for my baby. i feel like he's getting the repercussions of what's going on. it seems like nobody cares. nobody wants to hear anything about it. >> the new information we're learning this information is that four members of the state department of health are here on treasure island, checking up on radiation levels here. ultimately, the plans are to renovate this area to a development. but with the radiation concerns they need to address that first. we tried numerous times to contact the navy about this. they didn't return our phone calls. we also tried contacting jane kim, supervisor. this is her district. we've not heard back. back to you. >> thank you. a 3.4 earthquake rattled the east bay this morning. it happen happened at the san

rafael border. this comes after -- san ramon border. this comes after smaller earthquakes were felt. janine de la vega has more. >> reporter: well, there's been six earthquakes since friday. i am being told by geologists that this certain area of san ramon valley, it's care care act tris tick -- characteristically this area. the usgs says at least 1200 people reported feeling the shaking from as far north as vallejo to as far south as san jose. now, this map that we're showing you shows some colored dots of the six earthquakes that have happened in the same area of san ramon since last

friday which have measured between 1.4 and 3.4. geologists say this isn't unusual given the area, but if more occurs, they could kat gorize it as a -- categorize it as a swarm. >> they are telling us this is an active area. we have earthquakes in the bay area. it reminds us that we have earthquakes. that we have bigger ones down the road. it's just a reminder to prepare. >> reporter: geologists say they don't know if the quakes were produced by movement from the calaveras fault. that fault is capable of producing a magnitude 7 quake. the usgs said the quakes could stop tomorrow. they don't know. we've been getting a lot of the comments on our twitter and facebook page at ktvu. people are commenting how they've been feeling a lot of the shaking. reporting live from menlo park, janine de la vega, ktvu channel

2 news. >> all right. thank you, janine. neighbors are concerned about the death of a san jose man that's being investigated as a homicide. officers found the man unresponsive last night next to a fence and a house on san antonio street. it appears the man lives in that home but police have not released information about his identity or how he died. neighbors say they were asked if they had heard people arguing. >> they didn't say who it was, two men, a woman. they just said arguing. >> people say the neighborhood is normally quiet and trouble free. this is the city's 40th homicide. police are warning female students to watch their drinks carefully. people say there have been reports at spiked drinks at recent party. one victim said she was sexually assaulted. u cu. santa cruz police and -- uc scrauz police and the -- santa cruz police are investigating.

police say don't leave drinks unattended, never accept an open drink from a stranger and avoid going to parties alone. a private school commune is on high alert -- community in el sobrante is on high alert. it happened at the school on argyle road. the man walked in, gave the student afirst name and received a visitor's pass. he called himself james but left after staff approached him. the staff then called the girl's mother. >> so you made no arrangements with anyone to pick up your daughter? >> no. >> you made no arrangements to meet anyone at the school? >> no. i was completely horrified especially because it involved my daughter. >> the school sent notices to parents and held a meeting on monday. the ck:00 sheriff's office has increased patrols and richmond schools were told to look out for the man. >> to our continuing coverage

of typhoon haiyan. the death toll has now risen to 2,344, and today mass burials are underway in the destroyed city of tacloban. emergency efforts have been hampered by poor weather and extensive damage. but two airports in the disaster zone reopened today. transport planes and a cargo ship from the u.s. are arriving with supplies. the u.n. is contributing $25 million in emergency relief funds. countries around the globe are pledging millions more. today is an international day of solidarity for typhoon victims with numerous local efforts to help the $600,000 philippine knows displayed by -- filipinos displayed by the storm. the university is holding a relief drive and tomorrow they are collecting food, toiletries baby supplies and medical kits. almost half of the california filipino population lives in

the bay area. one student is worried about her father visiting relatives when the typhoon hit. >> i don't know how he is over there, if he's getting food, water, clothes. just worried and -- i'm relieved that he's alive but i'm worried about his situation over there. palo alto is contributing $10,000 to the philippines and the sister city called palo. donations will be accepted by the victims at san jose state university. it will take place in the martin luther king, junior library starting at 6:15. city officials launched a task force to coordinate urgent disaster relief. this local launch is part of a u.s. wide effort lead by the national alliance for filipino concerns. supervisors john avilos and jane kim helped launch the task force this morning at the community center on mission street. and professional boxer

madd up vailed a traveling display today that's -- unveiled a traveling display today. it's a trailer carrying the car in which a 21-year-old died when a drunk driver hit him on the bay bridge five years ago. madd will take the display to

fees. members of congress this morning grilled top obama administration officials over the implementation of the troubled website, healthcare.gov. the house oversight committee held one of two hearings. the oversight committee members wanted to know whether the officials were aware beforehand that the site was not ready. we've discovered that efforts were taken to cut corners to meet political deadlines at the end. people are working every day. some days are better than others. things are getting better. >> some analysts say it's unlikely the website will be functional by the november 30th deadline that the admin strax has set for itself. new faa safety standards will reduce the number of hours pilots can fly to prevent

fatigue but critics say there's a big loophole. while passenger pilots will be limited to eight to nine hours a day of flying, cargo pilots will not. they could be in the air as much as 16 hours a day. and captain sully sullenberger of danville who made the landing on the hudson river says that can be a recipe for disaster. >> when you are asleep in your bed at night and there are airplanes flying above you, it doesn't matter whether they are carrying passengers or -- or cargo. >> there's urging from scientists to governor brown

about fracking. fracking is injecting water and ground into the ground to extract oil and gas. scientists say fracking increases pollution and runs counter to the governor's efforts to cut the state's emissions. pg&e today renewed its alert for drivers on the san mateo bridge. do not be surprised if you see linemen hanging from helicopters working on the big transmission lines parallel to the bridge. this is video we brought you two weeks ago when the work began. the workers are replacing the lines as part of a $10 million upgrade to improve service for customers on the peninsula. officials at the graton resort and casino say everyone who had money in machines when the power went off will be reimbursed. the casino has used emergency generators after a car crash knocked out power to thousands in rohnert park. as claudine wong reports, some patrons called the experience confusing and frustrating. overnight the bright lights of the graton casino and resort were replaced with this --

darkness and confusion. instead of happy gamblessers -- gamblers inside, we saw unhappy people outside people like monica lynch. >> we were gambling. the power went out and everyone kind of gasped. and there's a lot of ticked off people in there. >> reporter: this was the cause, an accident near roberts lake park, a car verses a utility pole. that crash affected more than 3600 customers. but when you include a casino among those affected, you also have to account for the gamblers. if you were at a table, you seemed to be okay. this man took out his cell phone. you can see there was enough light to cash people out. but if you were at a machine, it was a different story. >> the bosses covered up all of our stuff. the machines went blank. a few of them stayed on. so some people kept playing. >> reporter: at least one man we talked to just couldn't keep

playing. his machine went dark with a couple of hundred bucks inside. >> they are telling us to get out and -- without paying anything. they say go, go. we'll call you. you get your money back. i promise. there's no promises. we have no money here. we travel two hours aday and we're going out with no money. no money for gas. >> reporter: it's still unclear how many people were in the same boat as that man from san jose. but today the casino described the impact from the power outage as minimal. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. another round of sunshine for most of the bay area. i have to use the word most. you can see what's coming up in the live camera. dense fog showing up. this is the scene we should be looking at maybe in july when you get the warm air compressing the manager. it's the middle of november. we're still talking about a summertime weather pattern that does include a dry weather

forecast as well. no storms out there. you just saw the visual with the fog. here's a closer inspection with the fog hugging the coastline. closer to pillar point for half moon bay. a little bit closer here for san francisco's ocean beach. away from this, a lot of clear skies and temperatures are warming back up inland. as far as the current numbers out there, showing you this -- san francisco downtown, 68 degrees. san jose, 69. and some 70s to report already for the 12:00 hour. fairfield, livermore and santa rosa. santa rosa reporting 72 degrees and mostly clear skies. here's our live camera out in the distance. mostly sunny skies. some coastal fog. winds pick up in the afternoon hours and the weekend a sun/cloud mix. here's the forecast for san francisco for today. at 2:00 this afternoon. you can see 69 degrees. by 4:00. 64 and then by 6:00 back down to the 50s. we'll go with 56. satellite and radar, the main forecast.

we have no rain in sight. we could use the rain. no rain. a system up here will be dropping into the state by thursday not much of a cloud producer. but it will be a wind producer. the brighter colors represent the stronger winds. you will notice all of this activity remains offshore. by thursday night, we could have northerly winds around 25, 30 miles an hour near the immediate coastline and also for the bay area hills. that will increase the fire danger. no red flag warnings in place. it's something we'll keep an eye on on. temperatures for this everyone why, we have sop hun -- options out there. a lot of 70s. pacifica, 63. san francisco, 69 and some more neighborhoods, santa fe 73. half moon bay 64. here is a look ahead to your five-day forecast. we bring down those temperatures a little bit into thursday. they come down by friday. with your weekend always in view, that's coming up for you

right now. you will notice this, the key headlines. cool, breezy. a dry weather pattern. but more clouds excepted for sunday. you will notice no rain clouds on the five-day forecast. temperatures trending down a little bit. by thursday and friday. it feels weird to be talking about dense fog. and high fire danger. that's a reality for today. the winds will pick up especially later on today, it looks like the target time will be thursday night into friday morning. >> get ready for wind. >> yes. todd christenson has died. he starred for the raiders in the 1980s. he died this morning at a hospital in salt lake city from complications during liver transplant surgery. he played college football for byu and suffered from liver disease and other health problems in recent years. changes for netflix subscribers to make the menu easier. and these cute little pickups received the red carpet treatment as they headed for a cross country flight and we'll tell you why.

infringement retrial. the new trial got underway to review penalties against samsung from a previous trial. lucyco originally awarded apple $1 billion but ruled the jurors made -- jury made errors in their calculations. the new trial will review that portion of the original award. a makeover to netflix' tv menu is rolling out. they redesigned the online catalogue to make it easier for subscribers to find videos to watch. the new look includes three large slide show images and a synopsis of the video. netflix has been testing the new look and says members who tried it have spent time looking at what's available. operation chihuahua lifted off this morning. nine received red carpet treatment to the east coast. they are on their way to new york city where they will
